  • About me.

I know enough to know that at 04.00am it gets dark out on the streets. It has done this for the last twenty odd years, to my knowledge and will probably continue for the forseeable future. At some stage in this ‘future’ I shall retire and probably won’t give a damn if it still gets dark at 04.00am. Until then I shall be out there, somewhere, lurking in the shadows because someone, somewhere will be doing stuff they shouldn’t and then, well then I will introduce myself. In the meanwhile I shall try to remain sane and remember why I joined in the first place and try to ignore all the people who piss me off by making the job more complicated than it should be.

Any opinions contained in posts are mine and mine alone. Many of them will not be those of any Police Force, Police Organisation or Police Service around this country. The opinions are based on many years of working within the field of practical operational Police work and reflect the desire to do things with the minimum of interference by way of duplication for the benefit of others who themselves do not do the same job. I recognise that we all perform a wide range of roles and this is essential to make the system work. If you don’t like what you see remember you are only one click on the mouse away from leaving. A Strategic Community Diversity Partnership. We are cutting bureaucracy and reducing the recording of target and monitoring related statistics. Our senior leaders will drive small, economical cars from our fleet surplus to save money to invest in better equipment for our frontline response officers. We are investing money to reinstate station canteens for the benefits of those 24/7 response officers. We have a pursuit policy. The message is that if you commit an offence and use a vehicle, we will follow you and stop you if necessary. It is your duty to stop when the lights and sirens are on. We take account of the findings of the Force questionnaire and are reducing the administration and management levels and returning these officers to frontline response duties. We insist on a work-life balance. We have no political masters. We are implimenting selection processes that take account of an individuals skills and proven abilities for the job. Our senior leaders will have one foot in reality and still possess the operational Policing skills they have long forgotton about and seldom used. All ranks are Police Officers first and specialists second. We will impliment career development and performance evaluation monitoring of our leaders by those officers who operate under that leadership. The most important role is that of Constable. All other roles are there to positively support the role and the responsibility of Constable and the duties performed.

“We trained very hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganised. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising. It can be a wonderful method of creating the illusion of progress while creating confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation.”......Petronius

Making sense of soundbites 2.

Since my previous post on this, I have been sent several similar new words and phrases that suggest that this verbal dross if far more commonplace than I had first imagined. It also appears that only ones who are actually ‘accountable’ in any real sense, are those at the bottom of the food-chain, who are constantly required to justify their existence to the soundbite inventors.

I have been sent some crackers but have also begun to look through a variety of reports and plans, crackdown literature and at the political speakers and realised that they seem to say a lot without actually saying anything it relevant, useful or worthwhile. How they get to this stage where they can talk for ages yet say nothing that can be used to pin them down or justify what they do baffles and amazes me. This seems to apply to anyone in the public arena who has a responsibility. in the loosest sense, for delivering something to somebody and usually as part of their ‘remit’. They evade answering questions like the plague and turn to their trademark statements of what should be asked or to deflect from anything contentious. When you see the public figures speaking just listen to what they say. They must have been trained in evasion and deflection techniques.

They always have a ‘vision’ of something.

They always have ‘aims’ and ‘values’ and always ‘work hard’ and always, always value differences.

When asked to quantify what they have done the same old stuff rolls out by way of statements that sound positive without explaining what has actually been done.

There is a real determination to sort this out or to get things done.

There is real momentum. There is a real determination about this.

Things are moving forward. Things are moving forward on the ground.

We have increased this or that or something else, in real terms.

We have spent, sorry, invested more than anyone else ever before (that’s called inflation mate).

There are now more of this, more of that, they are better equipped to deal with this and that.

We are doing better than before. We have more of this than ever before. We have more of that than ever before.

Just a list of positive sounding non-statements that try to create the illusion that something is being done all the time about whatever the problem is but at the same time saving huge amounts of money to ‘invest’ in the political niceties of the chosen group. One could, for example, remove or greatly reduce all border control yet claim that immigration is somehow a form of managed migration.

When it all goes wrong and there appears to be a small problem it-is never their fault.

There is always regret, or an error of judgement or even an inadvertent mistake.

Perhaps like the inadvertent oversight of £100,000 by one of our elected representatives.

  1. Which end bites, an excellent post again. Those that move up the ranks use these sound bites whilst kicking the butts of those at the bottom, and worse still they get promoted on these daft statements. WEB this is eaxctly what I have been harping on about.

” create the illusion that something is being done all the time about whatever the problem is but at the same time saving huge amounts of money to ‘invest’ in the political niceties of the chosen group.”

I guess in what I have been saying, these soundbites make the job of an operational officer difficult, they also don’t help the community, they just create an illusion. I guess what I have been saying is get rid of the illusion.

  2. Well c’mon. It’s so easy to overlook £100,000, isn’t it? Any one of us could.
I’ll bet you that, if he does get ‘sacked’, he’ll be given an even more lucrative position somewhere.
